Spelling Support Suggestions
We teach spelling through a scheme called No-Nonsense Spelling. This focuses on teaching the pupils spelling rules which they can apply to spelling in context, rather than learning spelling lists. Research has continually shown that learning spelling lists is not as effective as deeper exploration and learning of spelling rules and how they can be applied.
However, there are words that it is just plain useful to learn. Please find below lists of the 200 most frequent words used in the English language as well as the DFE spelling lists for Years 3 and 4/ 5 and 6. Parents are encouraged to practice and revise these words with their children so they may become secure in spelling these words.
Click here to also access a helpful spelling grid that has suggestions for practising spellings at home in a variety of ways.
